Make time for the Icefield Parkway during your Canadian Rockies vacation

Mountains along the Icefield Parkway

The Icefield Parkway is the scenic highway connecting Banff National Park with Jasper National Park.

And as far as scenic roadways go, the Icefield Parkway is tops.  You’ll never have a long drive that is so enjoyable. Seriously – unless you are afraid of a little bit of heights and a whole lot of snow-covered mountains and magical blue-green lakes and even glaciers and maybe even some wildlife sightings.

Where to Ski in Banff National Park

The bears may be hibernating, but winter is when the skiing comes alive in the Canadian Rockies. In the big Canadian Rockies national parks reside several ski areas. Today, let’s look at where to ski in Banff National Park, Jasper National Park’s neighbor.

When trying to figure out where to ski in Banff National Park, there are 3 options. In Banff, 3 ski areas operate during the November to May ski season:

  1. Lake Louise Ski Area
  2. Sunshine Village Ski Area
  3. Mt Norquay Ski Area

1. Lake Louise Ski Area

The legendary Lake Louise Ski Area is one of the biggest ski areas in North America. On a clear day, the surrounding Banff National Park scenery on its 4 mountain faces is so spectacular that a skier may have a hard time concentrating on skiing!

Banff National Park on a Budget

I am obsessed with spending as little cash as possible on a vacation.  The more I can save, the longer I can vacation and the more I can see.  For the Jasper National Park traveler, saving money may mean being able to visit Jasper’s southern neighbor, Banff National Park.  The 2 parks together are considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Both are great places to see but the price adds up quickly without a little planning.
