The song by Jessica Heine is called “Give Me Jasper” and it is all about Jasper National Park.

Jessica is a talented singer/songwriter who has spent her life in Alberta Canada, now residing in nearby Edmonton.

Are you ready?

One of the best things about taking photos in the Canadian Rockies is that you don’t have to have a fancy camera or be an expert photographer to return home with several frame-worthy photographs.

But if you like taking photos, learning more about photography could make a big difference in your end result.

Whether you’re using a point-and-shoot digital camera or an SLR, knowing how to use your camera can mean much better Canadian Rockies vacation photos.

On my next trip to the Canadian Rockies, my goal is to spend part of the time taking pictures, so watching YouTube videos about photography has been a hobby lately.

Here’s some good videos about photography that apply to outdoor and landscape photography.

To start with, here’s Rick Sammon’s top 10 digital photography tips – really good photography tips you can use throughout the Canadian Rockies, regardless of your skill level.

In this next video, Tracey Clark provides some great tips on outdoor photography – good stuff to know while taking pictures of the spectacular mountains of the Rockies.

Videos of Marmots in Jasper and Banff National Park

Hoary marmots are cool. Literally. They live all year round in the cool weather of the Canadian Rockies, hibernating over half the year during the colder months.

With a little luck, you may see them in various places in Jasper National Park and the Canadian Rockies.

They’re sometimes seen on mountain sides amongst the rocks or nibbling on grasses and plants. They’ll even eat ice for water.

In Jasper National Park, keep a look out on Whistlers Mountain after getting dropped of at the top terminal and hiking up the Jasper Tramway. Throughout the Canadian Rockies, hikers have seen hoary marmots on trails like the Skyline Trail that provide the right habitat for the furry animal.

Let’s talk skiing and snowboarding videos shot at Marmot Basin Ski Resort in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, North America, Earth.

This first video is a Marmot Basin official promotional video. Well, it’s not really promotional…it just shows some good skiing and snowboarding action.

Video: Views atop Marmot Basin, Jasper National Park

Natalie Lucier created this 3:55 minute video of scenes atop Marmot Basin ski area overlooking the surrounding Canadian Rockies in Jasper National Park. As she says in the video “mountains, mountains, and more mountains.”

All I can say is “Wow”.

While Marmot Basin ski area is only open during winter, an equally spectacular view can be had from nearby Whistlers mountain. Take the Jasper Tramway up Whistlers mountain during summer and then there’s a short hike to the top.

A Jasper Park Traveler’s 1969 Home Movie

The first minute and a half of this short 1969 home movie shows an interesting and raw glimpse into the way Jasper National Park was – from the perspective of a 1969 traveler.

Big 60s American cars parked on Connaught Drive in the town of Jasper at the center of Jasper National Park…then a Volkswagon Bus drives by
A mule deer or elk stands in a field and then bighorn sheep walk amongst tourists and campers.
The Ranger Station looks like it does today – though it now serves as the Jasper Information Center and houses a gift shop
The Athabasca Hotel looks like it did when the current building opened in 1928. Though modernized, it still maintains its charm today. I imagine the traveler stayed here.
The Jasper Firehall building is still there today but now functions as the Jasper Artists Guild….right near the park information center. A new firehall building was recently opened elsewhere in town.

The second half of the video covers a trip to Yellowstone National Park, a place I just visited and whose relation to Jasper National park I will explore further in upcoming articles.

I was able to easily create 30 second video clips of Jasper National Park photos. Animoto automatically adds effects and transitions. The result is a fun mini-movie. (Full-length movies and other features cost extra.)

Check out what I created from some mountain goat and wildlife photos from the Jasper Journal Jasper National Park photo gallery. I simply upload the photos to Animoto and then selected music. After about 10 minutes Animoto gave me these cool videos.

Jasper National Park and Preserving the Environment

Today is Blog Action Day, a day about the environment. Jasper Journal is celebrating Blog Action Day by celebrating Jasper National Park.

“On October 15th, bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind – the environment. Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic. Our aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future.”

For Jasper Journal, the task is easy. Jasper National Park is not so much about tourism as it is about nature. In other national parks, the tourist industry wins. In Jasper National Park, nature wins.

So instead of writing about the park, I’ve compiled photos I’ve taken of the park showing the wide range of nature within the park. These pictures have been compiled into a YouTube video.

Elk versus train: Who wins?

The elks in Jasper National Park wander all around in search of food. Sometimes, this puts them in a dangerous position.

Usually, the threat is automobiles.

In this traveler’s video, we see something different. As a herd of elks picnic alongside a train track and bridge, a CN freight train comes towards them.

The elk herd continues grazing. One elk on the track does not move until the last minute.

As the train gets really close, the elk decides to run and runs swiftly across the bridge.

He almost becomes a statistic.

Luckily, the elk makes it through to another day. He can go home and brag to his elk friends about how he outran a train.
